Voice: Song is a low, hollow cooing, “ooh-oohoooooooooooooo,” sounding like the blowing across the top of a bottle.

Status: Common resident throughout the Valley, seen mostly in dense woodlands where it is most often seen walking along the forest floor. Flight of this large stocky bird is direct and low (rarely above tree top level); wary in the open.

Habitat: Understory of dense, shady woodlands.

Best Spots: Easy to find at feeding stations at Sabal Palm Grove, Laguna Atascosa NWR, Santa Ana NWR, and Bentsen SP and also found in riparian woodlands along Rio Grande from Brownsville to Falcon Dam.

Similar Species: None in range. Closest in size to White-winged Dove, but lacks obvious white wing patch on upperwing. White-winged Doves also perch in trees out in the open, something that White-tips never do. White-tipped Dove, which gets its name from its white-tipped outer tail feathers, differs from Mourning Dove by size, tail length, plumage characters, and behavior. Note voice.
