Status: Locally uncommon resident in various urban areas throughout the Valley. During nesting season (April-Aug) parrots are often paired up while during winter months they can occur in large aggregations. In recent years, several dozen to around one hundred birds have been seen in Brownsville, San Benito, Harlingen, Weslaco, and McAllen.

Habitat: Red-crowned Parrots prefer urban areas with large shade trees for feeding, and are especially fond of palm trees for roosting and nesting (cavities).

Best Spots: In Brownsville, look for parrots in the general vicinity of Honeydale and Los Ebanos Streets; in Harlingen at the K-Mart near the intersection of Morgan and Grimes Streets; in McAllen on the east end of Dallas Ave (near Mockingbird St). Best times are at dawn and dusk

Similar Species: Red-crowned Parrots differ from Green Parakeets by their larger size, shorter tail, red crown head, and voice (see Green Parakeet).
