Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet

Camptostoma imberbe

mosquero lampino

Voice: Call is a clear, piping “peeek’, higher and sharper than the often-heard whistles of Black-crested Titmouse. The song is a descending series of similar “peeek” notes.

Status: Rare to locally uncommon resident in the Valley, primarily in the short stretch of Rio Grande corridor from Bentsen SP to Santa Ana NWR; very rare elsewhere in the Valley in places like Laguna Atascosa NWR. May travel with mixed-species flocks in winter, often vocal; may be seen perching conspicuously in the tops of trees during the breeding season.

Habitat: Dense riparian woodlands.

Best Spots: Most reliable at Bentsen SP, but also at Anzalduas County Park and Santa Ana NWR. At Bentsen SP, to be looked for along the inner loop, the head of the Rio Grande Hiking Trail, and along the Resaca Vieja Trail.

Similar Species: This small, drab tropical flycatcher superficially resembles migrant Empidonax flycatchers, but differs from most by the combination of bushy crest, pale eyebrow, short (blunt) beak, and non-contrasting wing bars.
